A true English wildflower. Until recently this species was known by the old botanical name of Stachys Officinalis. A long lived slow growing rosette forming perennial which, once established, will reward you will endless years of pleasure. English herbalist Culpeper frequently mentions the virtues of Betony in his publications. Not surprisingly for such a highly revered plant it famously had Italians telling each other ‘Buy Betony, even if you sell your jacket to get it’.
CULTURE – One of the easiest plants to grow. Thoroughly clear a patch of ground then literally sprinkle seeds liberally on top. Water the whole area & that’s it. The ultimate ‘sow & throw’ flower. Betony prefers damp, but not continuously waterlogged sites, & prefers slightly acidic soils. This wildflower benefits from a period of chilling to break seed dormancy so best to sow in autumn or early winter. Ideally find a location where it is left undisturbed & it will thrive. We find these flowers almost always prefer living in hedgerows.
