A truly great over-wintering broad bean. Can be eaten in soups, stews, casseroles or salads. It can also be used as a green manure / winter cover crop in the vegetable plot where its deep roots are able to penetrate & break up the soil while capturing nitrogen from the air. A truly British bean as it was bred at the Plant Breeding Institute on Maris Lane, Trumpington near Cambridge over 50 years ago. Expect to harvest early summer. The scented flowers are unusual in being a mixture of violet, cerise white & black.
CULTURE – Can be sown directly 23cm (9”) apart in Sept/Oct or Feb/March (although benefits from cloche protection during harsher winter weather). Prefers a warm, sheltered, sunny location with plenty of well-rotted manure incorporated into the soil. Overall height: 180cm (6ft). Tall vegetables benefit from plant supports such as string & wooden stakes. Plants need to be kept moist for good pod set.
