Cornish Pine Syn. Cornish Pineapple, Cornish Nonpareil, Russes Mill, Liskeard Gillyflower, Red Ribbed Greening.
Cooker / Dessert / Gin mixer
1920 Exminster, Devonshire
Triploid (needs 2 pollinators)
Mid Harvester – October but keeps well until January
The blossoms smell like rich old tea roses & its beautifully aromatic sub acidic fruit really tastes of pineapple! Daughter of the equally famous Cornish Gilliflower this variety really is a stunner. Deep red & green ridged fruits makes these apples look almost like they are about to burst. Extremely popular pre WW2 apple varieties especially in 1930’s Penzance locale & then later in the market town of Liskeard further east where market stalls sold these apples as ‘Liskeard Gillyflower’.
Said to be an endangered apple variety by some circles since losing favour with small domestic gardeners but the juice is gaining popularity with the gin scene for its refreshing, unique burst of flavour.
