Historically used in Love potions – it’s Old English name literally means ‘Love Parsley’. All parts are edible. The crushed leaves have a delightfully aromatic aniseed flavour, the seeds can be used as peppercorns & even the hollow stems can be used as straws. Like ‘Rum & Shrub’, Brandy & Lovage was once a famous smugglers drink as lovage cordial was used to hide the seawater taint in the boot-legged alcohol. Older Devonians can still be found ordering this combination around the county today.
