This red onion became the terror of Victorian society due to its famously fearsome diuretic properties! Having said that, it does form a very nice mid-size onion with large flattened top surrounded by dull red skin. Very dark layers outer layers revel a center of white. Good keeper, very strong flavoured. Can also be grown as a good quality spring onion, just need to pull them sooner.
CULTURE – Ideally sow in prepared seed trays Spring but be sure to avoid heavy frost as this will damage young tender shoots. Transfer to final position & space at 20cm (8in) intervals. Preferers a sheltered very sunny location with plenty of organic matter incorporated into the soil. Keep an eye out for slugs, snails & caterpillars as they adore all young seedlings. Water during dry periods & weed carefully around plants so not to damage the developing bulb structure. Harvest April for spring onion or wait until September for mature bulbs.
