Pear Apple
Syn. Snub Nose
Juicer / Cider
1861 Devon? Maybe Cornwall?
Self-Sterile (needs a pollinator)
Mid Harvester – September
VERY UNUSUAL looking apple – elongated to the extreme. The fruit also has a pear aroma making it quite the talking point. There have been various ‘pear apples’, dating back to Parkinson in 1629 and Evelyn in 1669 but this form is thought to be an old Devonshire variety.
Pretty pale pink blossom is outline with cerise making it look quite a feature in the garden. The apples are extremely conical, pale green-gold with dull red-pink flushes usually from the base. It is worth to note that this tree is rather fertile & thus will need thinning in June to ensure a good harvest later.
It can be stored for a month but it has been found to go woolly quicky so best straight from the tree.
This has some scab resistance due to its thick skin.
