Pheasant Eye pre-287BCE. Unknown Wilding, Probably Ancient Greece.
People are always amazed by two things with the Pheasant Eye (or N. poeticus var. recurvus to use its proper name). 1. it is not what people think of a daffodil, those large, yellow, brash trumpets couldn’t be further from this delicate, white, late flowering Poet. And 2. It can trace its lineage back to over 2,300 years ago as it was mentioned by Theophrastus in his Historia Plantarum! Throughout history this Narcissus has cropped up in folklore / myth time & time again. It was this variety that the ancient Greek hunter Narcissus, was turned into as punishment by the Goddess of vengeance, Nemesis following the death of Echo. Later it was the intoxicating scent of the Poet Narcissus that Hades used to Abduct Persephone into the Underworld. Its popularity has never waned & as so the Poet's daffodil is cultivated en masse in the Netherlands and southern France every year for its essential oil. It has so been unrivalled over the years that Narcissus oil is used as a principal ingredient in 11% of modern high-end perfumes due to is complex aromatic blend of hyacinth & Jasmine.
