An exceptional apple which all about the colour crimson! Its produces beautiful crimson apples with gorgeous red flesh making refreshing pink juice with a faint blackcurrant like aroma. Not only that, in the spring it is smothered in the most exquisite rich cerise blossom paired with bright oxblood red new growth creating one architecturally dazzling apple tree.
Its name, ‘Sops-in-Wine’, comes from the fact that when you cut the apples in half the fruit looks as if it has been steeped in wine. It is an exceptionally vigorous tree which easily withstands all which the Atlantic can throw at it. Across the pond in the USA they know it be the name of ‘Devonshire Queen’.
Not surprising this apple became a very popular variety especially in the Tamar Valley where not only the exceptionally aromatic fruit become popular on the streets of Plymouth, the tree itself made an exceptional accompaniment to beauty of the area, be it the blossom orchards to the humble cottage garden.
