An iconic English Wheat which has been feeding its people & roofing merrie old England for over 160 yrs. Thought to be a selection of a natural cross between ‘Scholey’s Squarehead’ & ‘Golden Drop’. Squareheads Master was grown commercially from 1860 until the late 1950s, today it is largely grown for as a milling wheat for Artisan Bakeries or for Straw Craft Guilds / Thatchers. We can say it makes superb Corn Dollies.
CULTURE –Thoroughly clear a patch of ground then either ‘Broadcast’ sow by liberally sprinkling seeds on top of the soil or alternatively, use a seed drill. Water the whole area well & that’s it. It is worth to note that wheat really does benefit from disturbed ground to grow as it is easily outcompeted by other plants (except for Corn Poppy, Cornflower, Corn Marigold & Corn Chamomile which are perfect bedfellows.) Aim for 20g per 1 square metre. Sow Anytime between September to December. Harvest when the grain heads become golden later summer.
