Where every Seed has a Story....

Did you know: There is an edible 14th century english pea with blue flowers? The 'Martock' broad bean graced Monastic dining tables around Somerset since the 12th century & the great botanist Charles Darwin himself had a personal vegetable garden where he grew 'Champion of England' for his dinner table.

Every year we will release a selection of the best olde English vegetables chosen for their solid constitution, rich heritage & wonderful flavour.

Come & grow along with us...

(we have done all the hard work for you but remember the seed list changes every year so get them while you can.)

The Seed Club Membership

Important: Due to some rather peculiar seed laws, some of our rarer seeds can only be obtained by members of our 'Seed Club'. Membership cost just £1 per annum. This will be added to the order & thus grant you a years worth of membership. Not only does this mean you can grow your own extremely rare British heirloom seeds at home, it also support our ever-growing heritage seed list making it possible for more historical varieties to be available next year. A win-win all round.

SEED CARE

  •     We recommend planting seeds in line what is stated on the packet. Seeds are best on the first year of purchase although if you find you cannot sow straight away, then you can store them in a cool, dry, dark, well-ventilated place until you are ready. (As these are living things so, please ensure the seeds always have an adequate supply of dry fresh air while in storage.)

  • Unless you are going for a 'naturalised look' then please remember to keep your newly planted seedlings  labeled! This not only help you identify what you have planted but also any future care can be given without the risk of confusion.

  •   When endevour to only stock the very best seeds & as such you can always expect only the very best to passed onto you.

We are a small family run traditional farm & currently run as mail order only. Our Seed Merchant Number is 7988   Sadly currently do not ship abroad at the present.

OLDE SEED CLUB T&C, SEED HARVESTING / SEED COUNT

By purchasing seeds from us you are agreeing to the following:

After harvesting, much of our seed is cleaned by hand, using traditional methods, so occasionally you will find a small amount of seed husk or chaff - this is in no way detrimental to the seeds or the seed storage. All our seed is measured and packeted by hand - for this reason our seed counts are intended as a helpful guide only as, where all care has been taken to ensure the amounts are as accurate as possible, the final figures should be accepted as an approximation. In some seasons seed can vary marginally in size so you may find a few less, but more often than not you will always find you will have a few freebies. It is also worth to note that Cluster seeds, like Beetroot, each contain several seeds in each cluster. As we count the cluster, not the minute seed, you will obviously be benefiting from a lot more than first thought.

All our seeds are tested & 100% viable at point of packaging as in accordance to our DEFRA licence.  We pack our seed in small batches on a weekly basis in traditional paper seed packets which must be kept in a cool, dark and dry place prior to sowing as excessive moisture and temperature could adversely affect germination. we would advise against putting your seeds in fridges where other vegetables are being stored or freeze them as this may adversely affect the seeds also.

Most of our seed packets have cultivation guidance on the individual packets; but we be also adding full sowing and growing instructions for all our seeds on our website / social media thorough-out the growing season.

All seed is covered by our Seed Guarantee - If our seed fails to germinate, given the correct growing conditions, we undertake to replace them free of charge or issue a refund at our expense. To claim the guarantee you will need to ensure the empty packet is returned to us within 12 months of purchase with your order number if purchased by mail order online.

We believe all our seeds are true to type, free from disease & are correctly identified. Where we have given information about our seeds, we have researched every type & believe to be accurate. But sometimes our sources can be wrong & as such make no guarantee to its accuracy. To the best of our knowledge the edible seeds we sell are safe to eat but, as always, all reasonable precautions mush be taken, especially if you have allergies to similar plants.

There is no warranty, express or implied, as to the type, description, or any other quality of the seed supplied, and we cannot accept any liability in any way from the progeny of your own home seed saved crop.

We reserve the right to refuse membership of our seed club, and to refuse to supply seed to anyone, without explanation.

We wish all our customers great success & Godspeed in their horticultural endeavours,

OLDE SEED CLUB MEMBERSHIP

Every seed seller is beholding to the powers that be & must adhere to strict guidelines Which means that we are regulated on what we market & what we sell. We completely agree that the industry must be regulated to ensure the highest standards are maintained but there are a few curveballs when it comes to selling the older, more historic British varieties. For us to make everything compliant, welcome to the old seed club.

Now, believe it or not the UK has an ‘official fruit & vegetable varieties list. Which, in all intents & purpose, is a great money spinner for the British government. Not surprisingly, it costs money to put & keep varieties on the official list & hence it's only profitable to sell listed varieties in huge quantities. Great if you want to a very limited stock of the same varieties, but for the home grower looking for the more diverse & historically important varieties, listing this varieties who be finically cripplingly, let alone a bureaucratic mine-field.

1,000 of our most precious English, Scottish, Welsh & Irish varieties have already been lost because of this massive oversight & poorly drafted UK legislation.

After taking legal advice & reviewing the UK Seed Marketing regulations guidelines we have the ‘OLDE SEED CLUB’.

As we strictly speaking we cannot sell certain varieties to ‘the public’, we can sell to our ‘members’. So, to prevent any more varieties from getting ‘lost’ we operate as a club. £1 pays for a year’s membership, so we are no longer selling to the ‘public’ but to our member.

We are not the only people who do this. There are seed sellers up & down the country who’s ‘Seed clubs’ are working tireless to ensure our horticultural heritage is not lost forever. All we endeavour for is the continuation of our historical varieties so our Great British horticultural legacy is not lost forever. You £1 a year does that.
